Your Vehicle: A Criminal’s Gun Shop

Martha Houle: A gun is stolen in the U.S. every 52 seconds. Let that sink in.

According to recent studies, the rate of gun thefts from vehicles has doubled nationwide over the past decade. For example, in Tennessee the rate nearly doubled from 2016 to 2017 alone. Other states are seeing 70% increases year after year. Police are reporting that more guns are being stolen from vehicles in broad daylight and in public areas, on a regular basis.

You’re especially vulnerable when parking outside of a stadium, airport, or other places where you aren’t legally permitted to carry a gun. While you may believe your gun is safe behind the locked doors of your vehicle, you should also be aware that parking lots, particularly those in gun-free zones, are like gun stores for criminals. You shouldn’t be forced to decide between your safety or leaving your gun at home, for fear of having it stolen.

But, the reality is that criminals know you can’t carry your gun into certain places. So what can you do? You can start by securing your firearm in such a way that makes it more difficult to steal. More importantly, you can get the legal coverage you need today to help protect you if your gun is ever stolen.

Edwin Walker: According to a study from the FBI, from 2012 to 2015 nearly 1.2 million guns were stolen nationwide.

When choosing on whether or not to store a gun in your car, make sure you are doing so in accordance with the laws in your state. You’re likely to be charged with a crime if you break the law – even accidentally. Unfortunately, this is something we deal with all the time.

When your gun is stolen, it has already found its way into the hands of a criminal. While this is not what any law-abiding gun owner intends, it doesn’t change the fact that you will be forced to take action. You will need to have the proper documentation in order, and you will need to notify the authorities. And if the gun ends up at a crime scene before you report it, your name could end up on the wrong side of a criminal investigation.
