In the video below, Texas Law Shield Independent Program Attorney Michele Byington talks about the pros and cons of Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Byington points out that Gorsuch’s writings on gun-owners’ rights are thin, but that he has the endorsement of several national gun groups. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced that confirmation hearings will begin March 20 for Gorsuch to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Gorsuch was nominated by President Donald Trump to replace the late-Justice Antonin Scalia, who authored the 2008 Heller decision affirming an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. The seat left by Scalia’s death has been empty for more than a year.
Gorsuch currently serves on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, in Denver, and has been called an originalist and a judge “in the mold of Scalia.” Gorsuch is an outdoorsman, a hunter and an angler.
Gorsuch faces a 60-vote threshold for confirmation to the bench. The Senate is Republican controlled, 52-48, meaning eight Democrat senators will need to break ranks to ensure confirmation. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has made threats of a filibuster, essentially calling the bluff of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to invoke a “nuclear option” of reducing the vote count needed to a simple majority.
