Law Shield would like to inform our members, and especially our NFA members, about a remarkable trend that the national media has finally noticed: NFA sales are hot.
An April 2014 article in Time magazine was entitled “Gun Silencers Are Suddenly Selling Like Hot Cakes,” which is not quite accurate. Based on our legal experience with NFA items, they aren’t “suddenly” selling. The rise in sales activity for SBRs, suppressors, Any Other Weapons, and other NFA items has been steadily rising for years.
The basics in the Time article are enough to make the point. Silencer sales to civilians shot up 37% in 2013 to nearly 500,000 units, increasing from 360,000 in 2012 and 285,000 in 2011, CNNMoney reports. There’s now a nine-month wait to register silencers with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
That’s all correct. We’ve noted elsewhere that BATFE is pouring additional resources — money and people — into reducing its eForm backlog, so perhaps those wait times will come down some.
