The Arms Room to Host Summer Youth Camp Starting July 18

If you’re looking for a great activity your youngster will love — and which will make them safer around firearms — take a look at the Summer Youth Camp hosted by The Arms Room July 18 to 22.

“The goal of this camp is to provide children with the knowledge and ability to make wise, safe decisions around firearms,” said Anthony Macaluso, General Manager for The Arms Room, located at 3270 Gulf Freeway South in Dickinson. “Be it with firearms or everyday life, our goal is to equip them with a basic understanding of responsibility and accountability.”

Macaluso said the goals of the program are to ensure campers:

  • Understand firearms and safe handling of firearms
  • Understand the fundamentals of shooting
  • Understand basic first aid
  • Understand the importance of situational awareness in everyday life
  • Understand the importance of responsibility and respect.

Macaluso said, “Because of the subject matter, we do ask that children be between the ages of 8 and16. No previous firearms knowledge is required.”

To successfully complete this course, Macaluso said, campers will need a ride to and from The Arms Room, a great attitude, and open-minded parents.

“We will provide everything else, including food,” Macaluso said. Cost of the camp is $25

Courses start each day at 8:30 a.m. and conclude after a snack break at 3 p.m. Topics include:

What is “Basic Gun Safety?” Campers will learn how to safely handle all firearms.

“We will go over safe handling and fundamentals. We will discuss and demonstrate safe storage. We will also go over safe loading and unloading as well as firing. This will all be done in a classroom environment with no live ammunition,” Macaluso said.

What is “Range Safety Officer Training?” Campers will learn that it is everyone on a shooting range’s responsibility to keep everyone safe.

Macaluso said, “We will teach the children how we run one of the safest ranges in the country and how we achieve that. We will teach them the NRA’s standard operating procedures for any range. We will have tests and competitions to further solidify the importance of range safety and how it is everyone’s job to see that it happens.”

What is “Handgun Training?” Campers will cover safe handling rules again and apply them to handgun fundamentals.

“In this segment,” Macaluso said, “We will go over the basic operation of various handguns as well as standard operation of all handguns. We will teach the fundamentals of shooting a handgun and help the children understand and apply them. This will all be done in a classroom environment with the newest laser training aids and no actual live fire.”

What is “Shotgun/Rifle training and cleaning?” Campers will cover safe handling rules again and apply them to long-gun operations.

“We will show campers the differences between rifles, pistols, and shotguns,” Macaluso said, and “we will teach the fundamentals of shooting rifles and shotguns. We will then go over proper maintenance of a firearm and reiterate on the safe storage of a firearm.”

After the camp concludes on Friday, Macaluso said, “We would like to invite the parents to spend Friday with us so your children can share what they have learned and demonstrate the application of it. Our goal is to remove the mystique behind firearms and educate children to make the right choices when around firearms.”

The Arms Room is a family-owned and -operated full-service gun store and indoor gun range located in Dickinson, about 20 miles south of downtown Houston.
