Stolen Guns on the Rise in Georgia — ATF Responds With a Phone App

 

Over the past three years, the number of guns reported stolen in Georgia has trended upward according to figures from the Atlanta office of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The ATF released data obtained from the National Crime Information Center showing that in 2013, the number of reported stolen guEmployee_Engagement_Graphic_Twons in Georgia was 7,718. In 2014, the number rose to 8,712.  In 2015, the number increased to 11,423.  And 2016 is on a pace to be about 20 percent higher than last year, with more than 7,800 firearms reported stolen through the first eight months of 2016. Nationally, Texas is listed as the top state for gun thefts, followed by Georgia, Florida, California and North Carolina.

The ATF has developed a phone app called ReportIt.com that it hopes will help in its efforts to track down illegal gun trafficking and those who deal in stolen firearms. ReportIt.com is a free community-based information reporting app that promises tipsters remain anonymous and tips confidential. It is available for download in the App Store and Google Play.
