As if Hurricane Matthew did not cause enough destruction, robbers broke into a Longs, South Carolina, gun store on October 8 sometime after 4 p.m., when the store lost power and its security cameras.
The owner of Five Star Guns, Dan Huneycutt, said he has battery back-up for his cameras and alarms, but they do not last long.
Police were not alerted to the robbery until early morning on October 9, when a former store worker drove by and saw the glass and front door broken.
Preliminary police reports indicated that about 150 handguns and 35 AR-style rifles were stolen.
Huneycutt issued a statement on the store’s Facebook page that read: “[W]hile the power was down, ‘They’ broke into our shop, destroyed the showroom and stole over 200 handguns, ARs, AKs, rifles, and shotguns.”
Huneycutt said he has records for all the guns stolen and the information was turned over to the Horry County police department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The information has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
According to the ATF and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the burglary. The ATF is offering a reward of up to $10,000, which will be matched by the NSSF, for a total reward of up to $20,000.
