The star of the hit “Taken” movie trilogy, in which Liam Neeson plays a skilled former CIA operative fighting to save his wife and daughter from various bad guys, isn’t too enthralled with some of his co-stars: that is, the firearms that enable his action movie to have “action.”
Speaking at a press conference in Dubai for the launch of Taken 3, Neeson said, “There’s just too many [expletive] guns out there. Especially in America. I think the population is like, 320 million? There’s over 300 million guns. Privately owned, in America. I think it’s a [expletive] disgrace. Every week now we’re picking up a newspaper and seeing, ‘Yet another few kids have been killed in schools.’”
To us, his complaint has the whiff of hypocrisy.
Neeson was reportedly paid $1 million for Taken, $15 million for Taken 2 and $20 million for Taken 3, according to the UK Daily Mail. His character, Bryan Mills, reportedly killed 32 abductors and enablers in Taken 1 (2008), 23 in Taken 2, and, reportedly, 63 in Taken 3, of which 31 can be attributed to firearms (one by AK-47, one by submachine gun, and 29 by pistols).
Normally, we’d dismiss such rantings as foolishness. But the Irish-born actor became an American citizen five years ago and currently lives in New York City.
There are plenty of other wealthy, elitist, and hypocritical gun-banners in NYC — a guy named Bloomberg comes to mind — whose private security details are likely heavily armed. Just like Bryan Mills! Apparently, life does imitate art.
