Several GOP senators have backed a purported upgrade to the federal background check system on firearms purchases in the country — Texas Senator John Cornyn’s S.2002: “Mental Health and Safe Communities Act of 2015.” We previously reported on the bill here.
In mid-October, the bill received the backing of Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, Idaho Sen. Michael Crapo, Arizona Sen. John McCain, Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, and GOP presidential candidate Lindsey Graham from South Carolina.
The bill incentivizes states to report potentially dangerous, mentally-ill people to authorities.
