Schumer Gets History Wrong

Law Shield would like to point out to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) a bit of history he got wrong.

The Washington Times reports that Schumer said last week that Thomas Jefferson was the architect of the Bill of Rights. As the Times notes, Jefferson was overseas serving as minister to France during the Constitutional convention and the congressional debate over the Bill of Rights.

Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

James Madison argued for ratification of the Constitution in The Federalist, commonly referred to as The Federalist Papers. He’s generally credited as the “Father of the Constitution.”

Other things Schumer got wrong: He was sponsor of the Brady Bill and the “assault weapon” and “large” magazine ban when he was in the House of Representatives. Since his election to the Senate, Schumer has spent a considerable amount of time trying to enact gun control.

And like his disregard for the 2nd Amendment, he’s after the 1st Amendment, too. He’s pushing a  new constitutional amendment that would grant government the power to control all campaign spending, including from individuals, candidates and outside groups.

Republicans argue it is an assault on the First Amendment’s protections of free speech, but Mr. Schumer says the First Amendment isn’t absolute — it allows for laws banning pornography or endangering public safety.
