Product Round-Up: Springfield's Newest Handgun for Concealed Carry

Springfield Armory XDE

Springfield Armory has announced its all-new patent-pending hammer-fired single-stack 9mm compact pistol, the XDE.

The XDE has a sleek frame just an inch wide, for hand and holster fit that is conducive to everyday carry. The patent-pending hammer design grants the XDE a Low-Effort-Slide (L.E.S.) that requires 27% less racking effort when compared to leading semi-automatic pistols. The exposed hammer clearly shows gun mode, and the single/double action trigger offers options for shooting style. The XDE packs 8+1 rounds of 9mm. With the Magazine X-Tension, the capacity increases to 9+1. The flat-base concealment magazine also offers an extended base plate that allows a full grip. Three magazine configurations let you personalize capacity, comfort, and concealability.

The High-Hand beavertail and trigger guard design naturally lifts the shooters grip to a higher position for increased control and improved stability. GripZone provides three texture zones to secure the shooters grip, minimizing slippage and twisting during recoil.

“When we listened to the challenges that gun buyers face, it was apparent that many people struggle with the operation of compact semi-automatic pistols,” observed Springfield Armory Chief Executive Officer Dennis Reese. “We decided to design a compact, safe, and carry-friendly pistol that was much easier to use whether you are a new shooter or skilled gunner. Now, buyers won’t have to make compromises when choosing a self-defense handgun.”

The first double-action shot requires an intentional, longer and deliberate trigger pull. After the first shot, the XDE reverts to single-action operation, giving the operator a much lighter, crisp trigger break. Supplementing the double-action operation is a combination manual safety and de-cocking lever. Ambidextrous, the de-cocking system allows the user to safely lower the hammer without pulling the trigger.

“We firmly believe that a carry gun should be one that users want to take to the range for practice, training, and fun,” said World Champion shooter and Team Springfield Captain Rob Leatham. “Especially for a gun suited for self-defense and concealed carry, it’s important to make the gun as easy and pleasurable to shoot as possible.”

Beretta APX Striker-Fired Pistol Is Shipping

Beretta began shipping the APX pistol in April after recently announcing its launch in the U.S. market. As a modular pistol, the internal chassis of the APX is serialized, allowing grip-frame housings to be customized or exchanged without affecting the serialized part.

Beretta has reduced the bulk of the chassis and has built in a high grip position, which offers better control and easier sight tracking. An oversized magazine baseplate helps fast loading and extraction, and full-length slide serrations make slide manipulation easier, especially when wet. The flat-faced design of the trigger promotes a straight rearward trigger press with minimal interruption of sight picture. Ambidextrous, reversible controls accommodate almost all hand sizes.

Beretta has manufactured semi-automatic pistols since 1915 and is now one of the very few manufacturers to offer full-size polymer and metallic-framed handguns in both hammer- and striker-fired operating systems. The APX is available in 9mm and comes with two 10+1 magazines.

FN Announces the FN 509

FN America, LLC has launched the FN 509, an all-new 9mm striker-fired pistol. The FN 509 was born out of the company’s effort to produce a contender for the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition.

“When the requirements for MHS were released, our team of engineers immediately went to work, taking the successful elements of the FNS Compact and further developing those to meet the needs of the U.S. Army’s solicitation for a new, full-size pistol,” said Mark Cherpes, president and CEO of FN America, LLC. “Between the submission of MHS and the commercial release of the FN 509, we have worked with law-enforcement agencies throughout the U.S. and captured feedback that we used to further optimize the pistol.”

Built on the architecture of the FNS Compact, aesthetic changes to the platform include the aggressive cocking serrations, enhanced grip textures, guarded controls, and recessed target crown on the barrel.

The FN 509 is currently shipping to FN distributors in two commercial SKUs. Other options, such as manual-safety models, are coming, the company says.
