New FBI Report Lends Credence to “Good Guy With a Gun”

A report just released by the FBI has provided detailed information regarding active shooter incidents in the U.S. in 2016 and 2017. The FBI defines an active shooter as “one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.” There were 50 such incidents during the two years covered by the report.

An interesting finding is that in 12 percent of the events, a “good guy(s) with a gun” intervened and stopped the shooter, sometimes without ever having to fire a shot. In all such interventions, the citizens all possessed valid firearms permits. On two occasions, the citizens were able to stop the rampage and detain the shooter until law enforcement arrived, without having to fire a shot. In four other cases, the citizens engaged in gunfire with the shooter to stop the killing. In one instance, an armed citizen that was attempting to halt the shootings was wounded. In another situation, an unarmed civilian tackled the shooter, taking the gun away and holding him at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived.

In its conclusion, the FBI stated:

“Armed and unarmed citizens engaged the shooter in 10 incidents. They safely and successfully ended the shooting in eight of those incidents. Their selfless actions likely saved many lives.”

While the report did not specify whether any of the locations were Gun Free Zones, it appears that at least 23 were in areas that prohibited guns, such as schools, government buildings, healthcare facilities, and churches. The rest are indeterminate but may have had prohibitions on guns.
