Missouri Banks: Debunking the Carry Myth

Can I carry into a bank in Missouri? Missouri law provides that you can carry your firearm concealed into private places of business unless the property owner has properly posted notice that the premises is off limits to firearms.

Proper Notice

The law says in or on “any private property whose owner has posted the premises as being off-limits to concealed firearms by means of one or more signs displayed in a conspicuous place of a minimum size of eleven inches by fourteen inches with the writing thereon in letters of not less than one inch. The owner, business, or commercial lessee, manager of a private business enterprise, or any other organization, entity, or person may prohibit persons holding a concealed carry permit or endorsement from carrying concealed firearms on the premises and may prohibit employees, not authorized by the employer, holding a concealed carry permit or endorsement from carrying concealed firearms on the property of the employer.”

If the building or premises are open to the public, the employer of the business enterprise shall post signs on or about the premises, noting that carrying a concealed firearm is prohibited. An employer may prohibit employees or other persons holding a concealed carry endorsement from carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle owned by the employer.

Banks

Banks are not locations where possession of firearms are prohibited specifically by statute, whether you are a concealed carry permit holder or whether you carry under the permitless carry statute, properly posted signage prohibits you from carrying on the premises of that place of business. If a bank posts proper signage, it can prohibit firearm carry inside.

If no signage is posted prohibiting you from carrying your firearm with you into the bank, then you’re not legally prohibited from doing so. Some municipalities prohibit the open carry of firearms. If you have a concealed carry permit, you may carry openly regardless of the municipal ordinances. If you’re carrying under the permitless carry law, you are subject to the municipal ordinances as well as their penalties.

TO SUMMARIZE

It’s always wise to consider your circumstances and not draw undue attention to yourself if you’re carrying a firearm in a sensitive location such as a bank. Be safe, know the law, and be smart in how you conduct yourself. If you’re unsure on a particular bank’s firearm carry policy, I suggest you verify the bank’s policy ahead of your visit.
