Maybe He Should Try a Mason the Bear Hat

In Douglasville, Georgia, election officials asked Bundy Cobb to remove his tan “NRA Instructor” hat before he early voted in late October. He complied, even though he said the hat was definitely not campaigning for any candidate, and the request by Douglas County Board of Elections officials “definitely infringed on my rights to express myself.”

According to Fox 5 TV in Atlanta, Laurie Fulton, supervisor for the Douglas County Board of Elections, said “The courts have found that anything that suggests [an association] with the NRA, in many people’s perceptions, is associated with the Republican Party. So in an overabundance of caution, Mr. Cobb was asked to remove the hat so that no one could interpret that we were playing any favoritism toward one party over the other.”

Hmm. Nobody stopped Mr. Cobb from voting, so that’s the good news. Does it seem over the top to be asked to remove the hat before voting? Yes.
