Law Shield members should take note that Indiana has made improvements in its state gun laws, one of which takes effect in a couple of weeks.
Senate Bill 229, which goes into effect July 1, will keep people who carry guns in their cars from breaking an Indiana law when they drive onto school property and leave their gun in the car.
Currently, under Indiana State law, a person could go to a school with a firearm in their car, for example, to pick someone up. However under the law they could exit the vehicle, leaving the firearm in the car, as not being in the vehicle with the firearm would be illegal.
The new law allows lawful gun owners to have guns on school property and leave the car to enter school property, if the firearms are hidden in a locked vehicle. If a gun is found in plain sight, the individual will be charged with a misdemeanor.
