In California, Dogs Kill Woman; Man Found Guilty of Murder

A California jury recently found Alex Donald Jackson, 31, guilty of murder after his pit bulls mauled a woman to death.

According to the Associated Press, Jackson owned four pit bulls that mauled 63-year-old Pamela Devitt during her morning walk in Littlerock on May 9, 2013.

Devitt died from blood loss after being bitten 200 times, the coroner’s office said. Gashes in her flesh were so deep that bone was exposed.

Law Shield passes along this story to our members for a couple of reasons. First, if you find yourself in Ms. Devitt’s shoes — trying to go for a walk in an area known to have dogs — it might be wise to do like the locals and carry a stick, rock, or gun (if your locale allows it) for protection.

Also, if a dog or other animal threatens you, at least in Texas you don’t have to let it bite you before you defend yourself. To read more on this topic, check out our archived article, “Do I Really Have To Let The Dog Bite Me?”
