After two previous attempts to get a gun control bill proposed by Democratic legislators were vetoed by Governor Chris Christie, the third time may be the charm.
Earlier this year, Gov. Christie twice vetoed legislation that would have required domestic violence offenders to surrender their firearms.
This time, however, the bill, S-2483, has Republican support in and the measure easily sailed through the Assembly and was finally approved on November 21, 2016, by a 60-2 vote and sent on to the Governor for signing.
The proposed new law would require the immediate surrender of firearms and firearms ID cards as well as firearm purchaser permits to authorities by those convicted of a domestic violence offense or when a domestic violence restraining order has been issued against them.
The “immediacy” provision of this version is different from the two failed versions that allowed a week for the weapons and ID cards to be surrendered.
A spokesperson for the Governor’s office said Wednesday that the bill is under review by the Governor.
If approved and signed by Gov. Christie, the law would go into effect on the first day of the seventh month following enactment.
