Firearm Sales Boom

While Texas Law Shield strongly disagrees with anti-gun policies President Obama has pushed, we cannot argue that he has been great for gun sales. Since Obama took office, 66 million firearms have been sold, and sales remain strong.

According to data released this week by BATFE in its Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Export Report (AFMER), U.S. gun makers produced a record number of firearms in 2012 —  8.578 million. That’s up 31 percent from 2011 (6.541 million). Moreover, the 2011 total was 20% higher than the 2010 mark of 5.459 million.

The 2012 manufacturing figures are the most recent ones released by ATF. ATF compiles data submitted by the companies and releases it each January, with a one-year delay to comply with the Trade Secrets Act.

According to the AFMER 2012 data, the top five pistol manufacturers in 2012 were Sturm, Ruger & Company (865,967), Smith & Wesson Corp. (606,082), Sig Sauer, Inc. (532,575), Beretta USA (140,670) and Glock, Inc. (131,550).

The top five revolver manufacturers in 2012 were Sturm, Ruger & Company (251,940), Smith & Wesson Corp. (216,150), Heritage Mfg. Co. (54,924), North American Arms (54,511) and CHARCO (36,992).

As far as National Instant Criminal Background Checks System, the ten busiest NICS weeks occurred after the Newtown shooting in December 2012.

Gun Mag Senior Editor Dave Workman told Bloomberg, “Barack Obama is the stimulus package for the firearms industry. The greatest irony of the Obama administration is that the one industry that he may not have really liked to see healthy has become the healthiest industry in the United States.”

In your view, what accounts for the record-setting sales of firearms during President Obama’s terms? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments section below.
