Detroit Police Chief James Craig has an interesting take on reducing crime in his city – armed civilians. Chief Craig believes the right-to-carry is an effective means of self-defense in a city with severe budget problems that has resulted in a smaller police force.
In 2014, Chief Craig said that after working in Maine, where concealed weapons permits are more easily obtained, his position on arming the public changed. Craig said, “Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed.”
Also, according to a recent FoxNews.com article, the “Chief Craig effect” — that is, the law enforcement official’s support and endorsement of gun rights — has led to reduced home invasions and other crimes.
Cause and effect: More people have guns, and it’s making burglars cautious.
Chief Craig believes his approach to firearm ownership should set an example for other large cities — lawful firearms ownership — and deployment — reduces crime.
It appears that in Detroit, you may find yourself on your own with limited police response in a life-threatening situation.
