When our lawyers and staff have a chance to visit with Law Shield members at seminars across the country, the programs focus on the law, but we hear lots of sidebar discussions during the breaks.
Because some LS members are of a certain age, declining eyesight often leads to talk of laser sights. And one of the biggest problems with adding lasers is how to holster them afterward, since adding a laser can change a handgun’s physical profile.
To find solutions for our members, we spoke to one laser manufacturer, Wilsonville, Oregon–based Crimson Trace, about the problem. Law Shield doesn’t officially endorse Crimson Trace’s products, but they are a major player in the segment. We asked Michael D. Faw, the company’s media relations manager, about holster compatibility with laser-equipped sidearms.
- Law Shield: If a Law Shield member wants to add a laser to his or her carry handgun, will they be able to find a suitable holster for it?
- Faw: Finding a holster has never been easier. The Crimson Trace website now permits searching for holster by firearm manufacturer or by holster manufacturer. Crimson Trace now offers more than 50 holsters.
- Law Shield: All materials?
- Faw: Many models are made from leather, nylon, Kydex, or other synthetic materials.
- Law Shield: What are some of the brand names?
- Faw: The leading holster brands in the industry are represented, such as, Blackhawk, Blade-Tech, Crossbreed, DeSantis, Galco, Mitch Rosen, Tactical Tailor, and others.
- Law Shield: So holsters are available for the full line of Crimson Trace laser sights: Lasergrips, Laserguard, Lightguard, and Rail Master?
- Faw: The good news is, yes. Most models are custom holsters that are adjustable, some can be worn inside or outside the waistband, and one unique holster is designed to hold a handgun at-the-ready by your bedside.
- Law Shield: And some of the pistols are…?
- Faw: The holster styles available in the Crimson Trace online store will fit many handguns, including, 1911s, Beretta, Diamondback, Glock, H&K, Kahr Arms, Kel-Tec, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, Taurus, and others.
- Law Shield: What about revolvers?
- Faw: There are also holsters for revolvers, such as the Mitch Rosen custom 5JR-EXP for S&W J-frames, and holsters to accommodate pistols equipped with Crimson Trace’s Rail Master and Rail Master Pros.

- Faw: Retail prices range from $25 to $75.
