Gun ranges across the state are recognizing the growing number of women buying guns and applying for concealed carry permits.
One such range, Summit County Shooting Range near Dillon, Colorado, has certainly noticed the trend and is doing something about it by hosting events to encourage more women to come out and try a variety of guns and increase membership.
On June 4, 2016, the range hosted its “Women on Target” course for a group of 30 women, some learning to shoot for the first time. The program is designed to teach women the basics of target shooting with a wide range of firearms.
“We have a wide range of people from complete novices who have never shot before, to people who have experience maybe with a rifle or a shotgun,” Summit Range Association president Brian Denison said in an interview with the Summit Daily. “It gives them the opportunity to see what the sport of target shooting is like.”
The course was first offered last summer to 25 participants and thanks to a $3,000 grant from Friends of the National Rifle Association, it was brought back again this year.
Throughout the course, volunteers taught best practices for handguns, shotguns and rifles, demonstrating proper stance, aiming and follow-through, as well as how to load the various types of firearms.
This introductory course to the basics of target shooting will be offered again later this summer.
The Summit Range Association is staffed entirely by volunteers.
