Can I Carry To a Sporting Event | Colorado

The following is a video transcript.

I want to talk to you today about something I have been getting asked about a little bit more recently, which is whether you can carry a firearm or bring a firearm to a sporting event.

Now at the outset, the majority of professional, collegiate, and high school events expressly prohibit you from bringing firearms into the facility. More often than not we are now seeing security checkpoints (either pat downs or actual metal detectors) that you have to walk through in order to get into the facility. In Colorado, we know that if we see that we are not allowed to bring a firearm into that facility.

You sometimes have events off campus. For example, if you’re playing flag football or soccer at a local park, like Wash Park, and it’s a school-sanctioned event, you could bring your firearm and not face any criminal sanctions; however, the school might have their own internal policy that prohibits you from bringing firearms to those events. If you’re found with a firearm, the school could sanction you privately through either expulsion or some sort of probation within the school. Obviously, that does not have any criminal weight, but it certainly would be a problem for you that you’d be facing administratively within the school.

There is also a difference between public and private schools. Now, Colorado law prohibits you from carrying openly at any private or public school. Colorado law is silent on whether or not you can carry concealed at a private school. What I suggest is that you don’t carry at any school at any time. If you feel like you need to or that you are authorized to give me a call first. I’m always happy to talk to U.S. LawShield members.
