Another Upsurge: December Gun Sales Up 15% Over 2013

CNN Money reports that FBI background checks surged in December 2014. Background checks totaled more than 2.3 million last month, according to the FBI, up about 300,000 sales during the same period in 2013.

Law Shield already reported that Black Friday 2014 was the second-highest gun-sales day ever. Now, December’s totals are up about 15% from last year’s total.

What pressures are driving the increases? Our members sounded off about the Black Friday sales record on the Texas Law Shield Facebook page a couple of weeks ago. Here are some of the factors they said were driving sales (responses have been edited for length and clarity):

Dwayne Maricle wrote, “I think folks are getting tired of all the thugs running amuck in our country. Since they are now shooting cops, it’s only a matter of time before the only protection you have is YOU.”

Larry Berger wrote, “Thieves, killers, robbers, and other lawlessness! Any other questions?”

Mike Winfrey wrote, “In the last 6 years or so, the media just can’t stop talking about gun control and covering all the violent crimes. That has only gotten worse, it seems, in 2014. I think people who were on the fence about gun ownership are changing their minds; people who are pro-gun but never bought one are doing so; and gun owners of the past are upgrading and buying more guns. I think that is supported by the fact that gun supporters now outnumber gun-control supporters by a decent margin.”

Jacob Barnett wrote, “Because we are on an HOV lane to hell.”

John Rantz wrote, “Gas prices are down! More disposable income in the folks’ pockets.”
