All About AR-15s

Law Shield members who might want to own an AR-15–style rifle someday, but who are confused about the terminology and setup choices available, should take a look at three videos (embedded below) available from Brownells, the firearms parts, ammunition, and gunsmithing tools retailer based in Iowa.

The Caliber Video shows the difference in chamber dimensions between the .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, and explains the .223 Wylde chamber and its potential advantages. It also examines other popular caliber choices for the AR-15 platform, such as the .204 Ruger, 300 AAC Blackout, 6.5 Grendel, .22 LR and others.

The Twist Rate Video shows how a barrel’s rifling twist rate is measured, and how slower or faster twist rates stabilize projectiles from lightweight varmint bullets to heavy match bullets.

The Gas System Video explains the different lengths of AR-15 gas systems, the potential advantages of certain lengths, and how to choose the appropriate gas tube.

“AR-15 parts, tools and accessories are a very important part of what we do,” said Brownells President/COO Matt Buckingham. “We made these videos in response to some very common questions we get about AR-15s, and to help our customers get the key information they need to successfully build their own rifles.”
