2013 Semi-Annual FBI Report: Crime Down

Texas Law Shield Members may not know it, but they’re part of a continuing, positive national trend: As Members and others buy more guns, violent crime continues to decline.

At least that’s one inference we draw from the FBI’s semi-annual uniform crime data for the first half of 2013.

Issued last week, the FBI crime report shows murders declined 6.9 percent from the first half of 2012, while aggravated assaults dropped by 6.6 percent nationwide and robberies were down 1.8 percent.

Forcible rapes declined 10.6 percent from the same period in 2012. Overall, violent crime fell by 10.6 percent in non-metropolitan counties and 3.6 percent in metropolitan counties.

And all these downward crime trends have occurred while the number of guns manufactured and sold has skyrocketed. See our earlier report on 2012 gun totals here.

The bottom line: Gun banners have said for decades that more guns lead to more crime. We believe figures like the FBI crime report show they have been consistently wrong.

Do you agree? Does having more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens depress crime rates? Or are the two data lines independent of one another? Let us hear your view in the comments section below.
